Is Your Next Boss The Don or The Donald?

Posted by in Career Advice

When searching for your next job, make sure your supervisor’s communication skills are constructive and not destructive. Before you accept an offer you need to determine if your future boss is the Don or the Donald personality type.

The Don as in Donald Trump type of boss is professional, fair and even tempered. What’s good for the company is good for the Don. This is one who’s open to hearing ideas, who will keep you around as long as you pull your weight. You’ll have to work hard for approval from this kind of management but you’ll learn the reward of achieving it is worth it. The Don –style mentor encourages employees to be creative thinkers, problem solvers and team leaders. Should someone succeed in these companies, the tough-love training received prepared them for a future of opportunities.

The Donald as in Donald Duck sort of supervisor is short tempered, overly dramatic and demanding. They take the credit when the team succeeds and point the finger when it falls short. People feel as if they have to walk on eggshells around them for fear of setting them off. The Donald is out for himself and takes my way or the highway approach to projects. The only way to get ahead in this position is plan to smooch a lot of tail feathers. It’s not about the work but about the “who owes who” in a manipulative and cut throat environment. The Donald-style dictators employ fear tactics, flaunting firing and yelling at team members when things go wrong. It’s only a matter of time before most team members are fired, quit or request transfers.

Remember when you go in for an interview it’s not just a chance for them to approve of you. It’s also an opportunity for you to check them out. If you find yourself weighing your options between different companies take a minute to consider your future employer. Ask yourself who's got the sweetest disposition? One guess, that's who… Who'd never, ever start an argument? Who never shows a bit of temperament? Who's never wrong but always right? Who'd never dream of starting a fight? Who get stuck with all the bad luck? No one but Donald Duck!
